3 Tips for Photographing Wildlife
Taking Photos of Animals and Wildlife can take some skill and allot of patience. If your following these tips you should be able to take some great photos.
1. Invest in a Telephoto Lens
Getting close to Mother Nature in action can be tough. Making sure your at a safe distance and trying to get close to the action can be extremely hard. That's why you should invest in a telephoto lens. The Normal rule of thumb is that you should try and remain 100 yards away from the wildlife this will help make the photo look nature and keep you safe. Using a telephoto lens allows you to do this.
This is also great when your photographing zoo animals behind fences. Few know about this little secret. Make sure you move close to the fence and then zoom in 100mm and you will no longer have the fence in the picture. Focus past the fence using a wide aperture. This is great because it just looks like a picture of the animal and you will never see the fence.
If you shotting a white fence it will be a little harder to get this affect. Regular chain link fences can be semi reflective, which can cause a glare in the sunlight and it can be hard to focus out. Of course when you try this make sure you are always testing your angles. Experimenting will let you find the best results for your wildlife photography in the zoo and in the wild.
2. Shutter Speed
When animals are moving it's important that you quickly make your mind up about what type of photo your going to take. To freeze the action you need to shoot at 1/500 or faster. Messing around with the shutter speed can be hard, and even harder when dealing with different light levels.
Make sure when your using your digital camera that you crank the ISO up. This is turn makes the camera take in more like and will boost the shutter speed. If you want your image to have motion try to shoot with a shutter speed of 1/4 to 1/8. Pan your camera with the animal you are photographing. You will need to be steady handed while you are panning. Make sure if your going for the best shot of an animal that you don't have to much background of the picture.
3. To Fill in Shadows Use a Flash
This is a trick professional photographers use often, but many amateur photographers have never heard of it. On a sunny day you can use a flash to fill in the shadows. We will not be using flash to illuminate the animal as if it was dark. But when used in the sunlight it will fill in the shadows and give you a better looking picture.
Remember your shooting an animal and they will get scaried from the flash, so be prepared for the action. You'll want to avoid such situations. In situations where you will be shooting through glass the flash cannot be used as it will reflect the light back and you will just have a white picture.
